Mother Does Post Office…

Picture 5-16

Mother haven’t done much that isn’t interesting in the past year (well, ever, really). And this definitely falls into that category. You have to admire them for taking on a British institution and being so, well, British with it!

It’s a lovely, crafted, humorous take on the Post Office – slight reminiscent of old British comedy (it’s a role for Ronnie Barker, really). I’m not sure that I see the relevance of Joan Collins, but then I liked it, so maybe you just don’t need any more than that. Watch it and see how well they craft the product points in to a script that doesn’t feel heavy-handed, yet makes lots of product claims…

Joan Collins is an old British institution!

Joan Collins is a very old British Institution. Possibly only trumped by the Trooping of the Colour – if you squint and tilt your head to exactly a 15 degree angle you can see her in the archive footage of the first one.

While I like the commercial (esp the gag about eventually getting around to the carpets) I think it is a little hampered by being, …well…, a commercial. I could imagine it making a nice mini comedy series made for YouTube and Mobile. Instead of shoehorning product detail into the short format (because broadcast is mind-boggling expensive to buy) it could be more subtly integrated into the storylines. The characters could be developed in the tradition of ensemble comedy like Dad’s Army or Dinner Ladies. Branded content is the basket I would put my eggs into now – in fact I am.

Agreed that Mother has done little of interest recently, well since ITV’s digital monkey earlier on this decade.

    But this is good.

Excellent brand idea – the People’s Post Office – which has hidden depths and is clearly capable of supporting engaging work.

Excellent writing as ever from Mother.

And the celeb thing is really interesting – allows them to do down at heal but maintain the stature and power of the Post Office (cos teh can get celebs to be in their ads).

    I’m a fan

I think the planned celebs for future ads are very ‘British institution’ too… although in this one it’s so cameo an appearance that you kind of marvel at the boldness of it.
Richard’s right – even a brief glimpse tells you that the stature hasn’t been lost.
    Lovely stuff.
