SilverJet And The Insider Joke…
Oct 29th, 2007 by Simon
I missed this in the actual Rugby World Cup – where it ran, apparently.
It’s a slightly serious rip-off (I say serious because it starts as a ‘remember this’ and then ends making a slightly serious point about SilverJet – so you don’t laugh so much as feel you’ve seen it before) – the people at M&C Saatchi were involved in making “Face” for BA so they’ve got more right than anyone to do a rip-off, but maybe it’s more amusing for us insiders – whatever the case, it’s fun to watch and probably cost about a tenth of the original to make!
In the post-modern world regurgitation and a wink to those ‘in the know’ is common. I don’t get any sense of this being a rip-off. It is obviously a parody. I’m not familiar with the SilverJet brand but on one viewing I got the clear impression that it is an alternative to the cattle class approach of other airlines.
The Flower Duet ad is so well known that the allusion would be obvious.
If I have a problem with it it would be the music. Just a personal thing, but I have zero tolerance for the Westernra/Church style of singing and found the choice of a morbid hymn to be out of synch with an airline – remember the old standard about airlines never talking about safety in their marketing messages…
