Superbowl Top Ten…

Well, just my own, slightly biased opinion…

Number 1: HP – A new twist on the “Hands” spots that started “The Computer is Personal Again” – hats off to Marc & Hart for this one.

Number 2: Coca Cola – Happiness Factory (spelt right, unlike the movie, so it’ll make Will happy!) – kudos to Rick and Hunter.

Number 6: Coca Cola “Video Game”

Number 7: GM Quality – even if it is a rip-off from Ikea Lamp! But, it is another great example of “Sad-vertising” (David Bonney’s brain child)

Number 8: Doritos “Live the Flavor” (which seems to be the public’s favourite currently – according to the YouTube polls…)

Number 9: FedEx “Moon Office” (Although the use of Europe ‘The Final Countdown’ almost got it higher!)

Number 10: Bud Light “Reception” – although it’s another rip-off. But, this time from an older ad – The Fed Ex “Fast Talker” with John Moschitta.

And, finally, for comparison, here’s the old stuff I referenced… dedicated to Faris, who might approve of the new ones!

While I do have a digital bent, I don’t think the web is the cure all to everything. But I watch these ads and what remember of the Superbowl is a lot of CBS house ads, a ton of car porn ads that sort of blurred together, and lot of talking animals selling I’m not sure what, and the rest a lot of cheezy humor aimed at the lowest possible IQ and still not very meaningful.

And at $90,000 USD PER SECOND…is it really worth it?

Yes, a lot of eyeballs on this, lots of PR and coverage…but if everyone is getting the same splash, does anyone stand out?

Emerald Nuts and Robert Goulet? Really?

    Sprint and Connectile Disfunction? Seriously?

I sort of liked the format of the earlier HP hands stuff, this new spot seems to be less distinct and less tied to HP.

All seems like a wasted opportunity to do something great on TV.

    …am I being too critical?

I also thought after…why did I watch a football game? I could have just watched the ads on YouTube!!!

I know, I know – I’m pedantic about ‘happyness’. Have just found out there’s a point to it, but still..

Got to get off my pedestal.
